Venetian Finishes

A Venetian finish is a plaster blend applied to the surface of a concrete slab and is used for decorative purposes. Using a Venetian finish makes a beautiful, marbleized or colored stone appearance that is highly sought after and can add value to your home or building. It is a time consuming process, but one that can bring beauty and value to your project.

Venetian finishes are applied to concrete in much the same way drywall is mudded after installation. Generally, a trowel is used to apply thin coats of the colored plaster. The first step to applying a Venetian finish is to ensure the surface it is being applied to is clean and free of debris. After this, a layer of concrete primer is added to the surface. This insures equal coverage and a smooth finish once the application is completed.

After the first coat of Venetian finish plaster is applied to a concrete floor or concrete wall, it must set for at least four to six hours. A second coat can then be applied with a color similar or contrasted with the first coating of plaster. This coat must also dry for four to six hours before sanding. After all the coats have finished drying, the concrete wall or concrete floor is sanding down using a fine-grit sandpaper. All the steps in the process can be repeated to provide additional coloration and texture for your concrete wall or flooring.
